Summer Lovin’

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Hello my lovelies! I hope you’re having an amazing summer, wherever you are.

Don’t forget about our summer throwing challenge, found on this Google doc.
Throwing counts on a 1:1 ratio, while playing is a 4:1 ratio. You can’t do more than 1 hour a day of throwing, but there is no time limit for pick-up. Also, throwing at practices and tournaments does not count.

Some ways to rack up dem minutes:
1. Weekly pick-up around Irvine: (check out the sidebar for location maps)
- Sundays (11:30am) at Dove Creek
- Mondays and Thursdays (6pm) at Heritage Park
2. KG’s Kamp. The first “kamp” you attend counts for the full duration (120 minutes), and every “kamp” thereafter counts for half (2:1 ratio).
3. Grab a friend/sibling/random stranger (just kidding about the last one) and throw!

Things to work on -
For the upcoming 2010-2011 season, Iris and Allen have set individual expectations for everyone on the team to achieve. We want to remind everyone of these expectations:
1) Being able to throw Flick and Backhand (# years you’ve played ultimate)*10 yards + 5 yards.  So newly 2nd years need to be able to throw 25 yards (2*20 +5) to travel.  3rd years need to be able to throw 35 (3*10 +5).  These throws should be flat, and in the chest.
2) Being able to break the mark.  Out of ten throws you must complete 5+ # years you’ve been playing.  so again 2nd years is 7 (5+2) 3rd years 8 (5+3).

Disc and jersey designs!
DISC DESIGNS due SEPTEMBER 1ST (yes, this is BEFORE school starts, so get ‘em in!)
Do not make images with large blocks of one solid color. I suggest using between 2-3 colors. For more information about design limitations, go here: http://discraft.com/art.html

JERSEY DESIGNS due NOVEMBER 1ST
Image will be only 1 screen on front of jersey shirt. Although there is not really a limitation, I wouldn’t suggest using more than 2 colors.

Please submit all scans, drawings, or descriptions of your idea(s) to any of the officers through email, at pick-up, or at the Goonies house! We will be voting on designs on the website just like last year. Looking forward to some bomb designs!

That’s all for now. Get out there and throw!

I miss all your smiling faces!

Missing all these gorgeous faces!

Irvine Ultimate

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Thank you for attending banquet! Huge thanks to everyone who contributed in organizing it. Especially the ones who spent all week (or the whole night before) making videos for all of us to watch. If you didn’t get a good seat in the house, here are the men’s highlight videos:

Nightlife (A-team): http://vimeo.com/11972265

Thuglife (B-team): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN_qVHXSkCk

My design that I put on Jigsaw's custom Sigg for winning Assassins. Except it has his jersey number on it.

I’ll post our highlight videos that atomic and alma made once they’re up. I hope you all had fun dancing =)

Most Likely to…

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Hey IRVINE,

Don’t forget to vote for our Yearbook/Superlative Awards! Only half of you have voted so we need them in by FRIDAY! For those who are a little confused about the definitions, here’s a clarification from tron:

Most Gratuitous - This is specifically referring to playing ultimate. being gratuitous means being unnecessary, ie laying out when you don’t have to, aggressively knocking a disc down on D when there are no offenders around, etc.

Most likely to cherry pick their way to the wall of fame - to cherry pick means to choose only the best people

Biggest treat - this is Scott M’s word, but the way I would describe “treat” is someone who is lame/pathetic/generally someone you dislike; a chump. But in certain contexts it is also used in a joking way among friends.

Most likely to turn their defender around - This means having fakes so good that you make your defender turn their head/body around trying to find the disc while it is still in your hand

Most likely to point block you - Pointblock means a hand or foot block

Also, some people INcorrectly thought that you are only supposed to pick one person total for each award. You should pick one boy AND one girl. If you want to change your vote fill out the form again answering only the ones you need to change. Be sure to write that it is a re-vote AND write who you voted for the first time around (and differentiate between the two). It also helps to have a picture of our team while you’re voting. Especially since our men’s teams are big.

Don't forget your teammates! This was taken at our last tournament at FOOLerado '10.

That’s all! Thank you to everyone who supported and helped with our fundraising this week!

Fundraising, Banquet, Mafia

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

We are fundraising tomorrow 11 AM – 3 PM on anteater plaza by the flagpoles. Come out to support!

Banquet is this Saturday evening. Casino Royale is the theme, please dress up! All the officers have been working hard to organize and decorate our banquet. Other players have been working on each team’s highlight videos. Don’t miss out! We moved the times back 30 minutes. Meet at the Goonies at 4:30 PM and then we’ll be moving to M House at 7:00 PM.

Also, if there is anyone that would like to contribute to Banquet and is free on Friday – we’ll need helpers to help clean and decorate! You can also help by bringing or making any desserts to M House so we can snack while we watch our videos and awards =)

Speaking of highlight videos, below is one that Steve made for SB Classic last year. Next week we’ll be splitting into teams at practice so this years Mafia ‘10 can work together.

Don’t forget to eat healthy and study!

Coed Practices

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Since the UPA series is over for all of us, we’ve started having coed practices to prepare for SB Classic, May 29-30. This is a fun coed tournament that Irvine players generally attend every year. This year we’ll be greatly represented by spreading our talent with the following teams: MAFIA, Roeder’s Runners, The Polar Bears, and LA Metro.  Practices will now be held Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM on the lower ARC fields across from where we normally practice. All UCI students interested in Ultimate Frisbee are welcome to come out and play with us. We begin promptly at 6:00 PM. Expect the practices to consist of: Warm Up, Drills, Learning H-stack, Scrimmaging, Drills.

Sam coaching Irvine. What a huge group of good-looking ultimate players!

Sam has a huge sweat drop on his head because everyone has questions. Hooray for coaching coed! What a huge group of good-looking ultimate players!

Also, here’s some inspiration that a friend sent my way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAJLFE_zDdw

*This post is dedicated to Pato, who made me aware that I’ve neglected updating =)
